Well, it sure isn't the study of Meteors! Lol!
Meteorology is the study of processes in the atmosphere which cause what we perceive and experience as our weather.
A primitive, if somewhat effective definition.
Raindrops and other precipitation are sometimes referred to as "hydrometeors".
The sun heats the earth, air rises because of the heating, and clouds form. Where cold masses of air meet up with warm ones, storms form. In winter this can mean Nor'easters and blizzards. In summer over the Tropics, this can mean Hurricanes. Over the Great Plains, particularly in the Spring, (but not confined to that geographical region or that time of year) warm, moist air collides with cold, drier air from Canada and the Polar regions and results in explosive thunderstorms known as Supercells, which can spawn the dreaded tornado.
