Flooding Concerns Again in East
9AM EDT, October 26, 2003
By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Justin Consor
Many easterners were awakening to a very wet Monday as a fetch of very moist air from the Gulf and Atlantic interacted with a slow-moving cold front.
Flood watches were in effect through Monday evening from eastern parts of Pennsylvania and New York into western Massachusetts and Connecticut and much of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
As of mid Monday morning, many locations in the AWS WeatherNet had already picked up over 1" of rainfall since midnight, including Pottsville Area High School in central Pennsylvania (1.5") and Mountain View High School in Haymarket, VA (1.6")
A general 1 to 3" of rainfall is expected from the Carolinas into the mid-Atlantic and the northeast. The rain is expected to move off the east coast by Tuesday morning.
For many eastern locations October has been the first month with below normal rainfall since January. However that may not remain the case after this storm`s drenching is finished.
In addition to the flooding potential, severe storms are a concern in coastal areas of the mid-Atlantic, especially if some sunshine breaks out. Damaging winds are the main threat.
